The Kimberley Dynamiters have acquired forward Matt Lucero (1994) from the Revelstoke Grizzlies in exchange for the playing rights to defenceman Owen Solecki (1994).

Roller derby is on the rise around the world and proof of that can be found right here in the East Kootenays.
According to Bryan Mcwilliam, manager for Canada’s national roller derby team, it’s a combination of factors that has helped propel derby to its current status.
“The switch from a sideshow act, similar to professional wrestling, to a more [legitimate] sport has kept people coming back,” Mcwilliam wrote via email Thursday afternoon. “The sport allows people who may have lost their window in sports such as hockey, figure skating or anything else, to continue to play an amateur sport at a competitive level.” Continue reading

Scott and Rob Niedermayer sit side-by-side at a table in Western Financial Place awaiting a long line of excited young hockey players and adoring fans.
For hours on a sunny Friday afternoon in August, they sit at that same table, signing autograph after autograph; taking photo after photo. It’s repetitive and monotonous, yet the two brothers sign every hat, photo, hockey stick and sweater that is passed their way.
It’s a small gesture for two former National Hockey League stars, but the weight it carries with each starstruck child is immeasurable. It also happens to exemplify just how much the Cranbrook community means to the Niedermayer brothers. Continue reading
